When to Start Career Exploration

Many students feel intense pressure in declaring a major/post-secondary path senior year. Early exploration helps that decision feel confident, not rushed.

Career path development is a person-centered, developmental process that ideally begins with self-exploration in elementary and/or middle school school and progresses through career exploration, pathway identification, and deep work-based learning experiences, empowering students to confidently declare a major and career direction by high school graduation.

 Timeline Snapshot

Elementary School (Grades K–5): Self-Exploration & Awareness

Focus: Understanding self and the world of work

Purpose: Build self-awareness and curiosity without pressure

Middle School (Grades 6–8): Career Exploration & Broad Exposure

Focus: Exploring career clusters and pathways

Purpose: Expand awareness and connect interests to possible careers

High School – Early (Grades 9–10): Pathway Identification & Skill Building

Focus: Narrowing interests and building foundational skills

Purpose: Help students identify 2–4 career pathways to explore more deeply

High School – Upper (Grades 11–12): Deep Dive Exploration & Decision-Making

Focus: Intentional exploration and confirmation

Purpose: Ensure students feel confident declaring a major/postsecondary pathway
